Smart tele-epilepsy – aiding diagnosis and treatment through the use of phones, wearables, and other devices – is the way forward for routine care in epilepsy, according to a specialist.

In the Hot Topics symposium on epilepsy and COVID-19, Dr William Tatum, Professor of Neurology at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, USA, provided an overview of the advances made since the COVID-19 pandemic began in March 2020.

While inpatient video-EEG monitoring (VEM) remains the gold standard for diagnostic and pre-surgical evaluation, the COVID-19 pandemic made access difficult, fueling the use and evaluation of alternative digital technologies for epilepsy care.
