Do disease networks in PD represent maladaptive or compensatory wiring responses?

In Parkinson’s disease (PD) networks, core assortativity is increased in patients with GBA variant PD, in which the clinical phenotype tends to be more aggressive, but reduced in patients with the LRRK2 mutation, which is associated with slower progression, new study findings suggest.

This conclusion was reached by researchers at the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research, New York, USA, who predicted that assortative networks are maladaptive, because of their inefficiency and vulnerability, whereas disassortative networks are compensatory, because of their efficiency and robustness.
