The use of artificial intelligence (AI) may help detect falls in residents with dementia and improve response, new research says.
According to Juliet Holt Klinger of Brookdale Senior Living in Chicago, Illinois, USA, residents with dementia are twice as likely to experience falls than residents without dementia. Falls account for one-quarter of hospitalizations in residents, and many falls (up to 80%) are “silent” falls that go unrecognized.
Holt Klinger and colleagues therefore conducted a pilot study to assess the ability of AI to recognize falls in residents with dementia. Conducted at two sites (a nursing home/rehabilitation facility and an assisted living facility), the study required informed consent from the families of residents before participating.
